The Urban Farm Tour is underway!

 Sponsorship Opportunities Available.
Please contact Viviane Trama (viviane@greenvilleorganicfoods.org) for details.

On Saturday, May 12, the second annual Urban Farm Tour, hosted by GOFO and sponsored by Piedmont Natural Gas and Whole Foods Market, will feature extraordinary examples of city residents who are making our city more sustainable by growing their own food, raising chickens, keeping bees, catching rain water, implementing energy savings solutions and much more. Best of all, these wonderful hosts are willing to inspire others with their knowledge, their successes and the lessons that they have learned.

This self-guided tour will include over 25 sites to visit, all within 10 miles of downtown Greenville. Our goal is to show city residents just how easy it is to practice sustainable living by growing food and implementing energy efficiency right where we live, work and play.

We are excited to announce that we are now accepting applications for the 2012 Urban Farm Tour. If you’re interested in becoming a tour site, you can apply online here or via the UFT website.  (Please note that submitting an application does not guarantee inclusion in the tour. Applicants will be notified by March 1st whether or not they will be a featured site).

We anticipate another successful event turnout!

ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR TOUR SITES – Deadline is Monday, FEB 20.

Say NO to GMO!

Why you should be very concerned? Because GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) are created by scientists in laboratories. Scientists make up  ”Plants or animals that have had their genetic makeup altered to exhibit traits that are not naturally theirs.”   The major concern with genetically engineered foods is based in food safety, their effect on natural ecosystems, gene flow into non GE crops and corporate control of our food supply.

While 93% of Americans believe GE foods should be labeled, for decades the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has blocked GE labeling.  It’s time the FDA protected our right to know what’s in our food.  FYI, Japan, Australia, the European Union and even China and Russia require labeling of GE foods.

We believe genetic engeneered food poses a dramatic danger to the security our food supply. And we are asking you to take action to demand labeling of GMO in foods.

The Center for Food Safety has filed a petition with FDA formally requesting the agency use its authority to require labeling of GE foods.

You can support this petition by joining the “Just Label It: We Have A Right to Know” campaign.
Thanks for taking action today!

Eat your veggies, eat them raw!

It is wide accepted that eating vegetables promote good health and may prevent an array of chronic and metabolic diseases. If you are looking for reasons to increase your vegetable consumption I urge you to read Dr. Mercola ‘s article which explains in detail the benefits of eating organic vegetables.

This informative article presents many reasons why we should be eating plenty of fresh, minimally  processed high quality vegetables, ideally locally-grown and organic, with a majority of them consumed raw. To learn more click here .
